Welcome to the Childhood Inequalities Linked Data Research Network

Not all childhoods are the same and children need different kinds of support to be able to live well.

Child-ren provides top quality evidence to help to understand what is happening to children across their lives and how each child could be better supported.

Child-ren is a collection of research projects using existing data and linked datasets about large groups of children.

Child-ren’s research aims to better understand how different challenges impact children’s lives and how we can reduce inequalities in childhood to improve wellbeing.

Child-ren has been using a new linked administrative government dataset from the Department for Education and the Ministry of Justice.

The data covers all children in England, so it is helpful to understand outcomes for groups of children who may not take part in other types of research. It has been used here to understand what happens to children in the care system, which is anyone who had a social worker in childhood.
Some of these children have also been looked after away from their family home, for example staying with a foster carer.
The research in the animation looks at whether children in the care system were more or less likely than other children to have a criminal caution or conviction by the time they were age 25.

Key Findings

Child-ren are researchers who network with data owners, people who work directly with children, and people who make decisions about young people’s services.

Child-ren works with young people to help decide what questions the research should ask and to make sure that our research reports are fair and have the best chance to make the changes young people want to see.
